Devils Lake police officials declared that an individual connected to at least two carjacking cases and opening fire on a state trooper tried to commit suicide after the authorities tracked him down to an apartment. Authorities said that the man took two hostages, and later tried to commit suicide rather than surrender.
According to Captain John Barnett of Devils Lake’s Police Department, the carjacking suspect who tried to shoot a state trooper was recently apprehended and that there’s no need for concern. Identified as Daniel TwoHearts, the man who’s responsible for at least two car thefts, kidnapping, and taking hostages, has been hospitalized and treated for a non-fatal gun wound.
Barnett told the press that the events leading to TwoHeart’s attempted suicide started to unfold on Thursday night. A trooper from the North Dakota Highway Patrol spotted a pick-up truck on the 29th Interstate which produced a loud, bang-like sound.
The trooper pulled over the owner of the vehicle for inspection. However, upon approaching him, the suspect panicked and pushed the gas pedal to the floor. The trooper jumped into his car and went after him.
After a high-speed chase, the law enforcement officers managed to stop the suspect’s car after deploying spike traps. As one the troopers approached the vehicle, TwoHearts jumped out and discharged his handgun. Lieutenant Troy Hischer of North Dakota Highway Patrol declared that the trooper was not injured during the incident and that he did not open fire.
However, the carjacking suspect managed to flee the scene. Upon investigation TwoHeart’s car, the authorities discovered two other persons and a stash of methamphetamine.
After evading the authorities, TwoHearts made his way to a nearby neighborhood where he stole a car with an infant in it. The authorities later retrieved the car, after deploying spike traps. The infant was injured during TwoHearts’ getaway, but he again managed to escape.
The next day, the law enforcement authorities received a report of a stolen vehicle, which was later tracked down to a Wal-Mart park lot.
Working with the state troopers, the Devils Lake police officials managed to track down the carjacking suspect to a nearby apartment. After the officers had arrived, the suspect panicked again and told the authorities that he has two hostages and that he will harm them if the officers attempted to storm the house.
After a couple of minutes of negotiations, the law enforcement authorities heard a gunshot coming from inside the apartment. They found TwoHearts lying on the ground after he attempted to commit suicide. The carjacking suspect was later taken to the hospital to receive medical treatment for a non-fatal gun wound.
