Recent news announced that Descent Creators will release Overload on Kickstarter.
Revival Productions said that Overload, a new game from Descent’s designers, is going to surprise gamers around the world. The new game is a successor of Descent game which includes the best of 6-DOF gameplay with innovative graphics and technology.
Mike Kulas, Descent’s designer, said:
‘It’s so exciting to be working on a small team again and we’re thrilled with how the game is coming along. Overload already has that fluid feel and now we’re at a great stage of development where cool stuff is dropping in every day.’
Overload is said to be Descent in all except the name. It features twisty paths, robot enemies, the already known destroy-and-escape objective, and a fundamental level-creation setting. All these options are very similar to the original games.
The lighting and smoke effects are more sophisticated and the explosions use lots of shrapnels. Each level will be structured with the same deformed-cube building blocks that made the first games look unique. The design complexity is the same as the other games but the screenshots and the pitch video are improved.
Overload looks like a 1990s-style shooter upgraded with a 2016 accent on the art and tale. The new game is filled with complex paths layouts. Due to a clean design sense, these paths can be easily read. Lots of 3D action games have four or five freedom degrees in their motion controls.
Space combat games enable three rotation axes, but normally just one movement axis. The first person shooters usually have two rotation axes and 2.5 movement axes. A six-degree-of-freedom shooter allows you to control all three axes of rotation and all three axes of movement.
Even if this creates complexity in moving and controlling the character, the reward is an unique experience. Fighting and movement are more dynamic, as you are allowed to interact in 3 full dimensions. The main focus in classic 6-DOF shooters was simple: get the reactor and destroy it in order to escape.
However, Overload focuses on carrying out your objective. Each level is filled with gameplay movements to shoot all around you. Also, it features secrets that must be revealed and traps to trigger. Cryonically frozen hostages who need rescue are also present.
During the gameplay, you’ll find many of robots to battle or run from. There are also collectable keys, shortcuts to take and reactors that must be destroyed. In order to make an exit, you must race as the timer is counting down. Descent Creators Will release Overload on Kickstarter on March 2017.
