As technology advances, public transportation means stand as one of the targeted domains. The latest news in the field is concerned with electric buses. Replacing traditional fuel by electric batteries is a major step towards a healthier planet and even lifestyle.
Electric cars are quite common, but electric buses are not that usual. The big vehicles have been recently tested for electric batteries and showed compatibility.
The company behind the first electric bus model is Proterra. The American company is specialized in designing electric vehicles. They have recently made the announcement of the new electric buses. The model is called Catalyst E2, and can travel as much as a regular bus.
Proterra sold its first electric buses seven years ago, back in 2009. However, the first models had some inconveniences, including ones regarding speed. The developers themselves were not quite satisfied with their products, as their speed was below that of electric cars.
On the other hand, the new Catalyst E2 seems to have no flaws at all. It has a 315 miles range, which is quite an achievement, giving the fact that most electric vehicles score under three hundred. It can also travel for eighteen hours, which is the normal duration of a regular bus too. The buses have room for seventy-seven passengers and can travel 350 miles without needing a recharge. The electric batteries are also manufactured by Proterra.
As far as the car body is concerned, it is made of carbon fiber composites. This means that the new electric buses are not heavy, but are durable and resistant. The batteries are placed underneath the buses’ body. They can be recharged at night at the typical stations.
If you are curious about the time that we can see the electric buses on the streets, it won’t happen at least by the end of the next year. The company announced that more than three hundred vehicles had already been pre-ordered. However, they will be fully functional by the end of 2017, according to official sources.
Statistics show that thousands of regular buses need to be replaced every year in the United States. Proterra sets itself the ambitious aim of replacing traditional buses by its modern, electric products. Their initial price is high, but the maintenance and their efficiency throughout the years lead to significant savings in the official budgets. All in all, electric buses are a sound investment, for both the economy and the environment.
