Following the announcement posted by France’s Institute of Space Medicine and Physiology who wants volunteers willing to spend two months in bed, a similar ad has popped up on a British employment website. The residents of Fair Isle, considered to be the United Kingdom’s remotest inhabitable island, are looking for certified nurse to fill in the position which was recently vacated.
If you believe that your workplace is too dull, underpaid or simply not fulfilling, then you might be interested in a job ad which was recently posted on a British website. The Fair Isle calls upon all adventurous and enterprising spirits who are willing to move in and provide high-quality medical assistance to the sixty souls living on the island.
More specifically, the Fair Isle is looking for a certified nurse to fill in the position which was recently vacated. According to the job’s description, it would appear that the Isle’s former nurse, Elena Mera-Long, of Romanian descent, will be heading back to Romania at the end of the month.
Before applying for this position, there are a couple of things you should know about Fair Isle. First of all, there’s no doctor on the island. It would appear that a medical professional comes in to check up on the patients once every three months. This means that the individual applying for the job must have a certain degree of autonomy in making medical decisions.
Fair Isle is quite popular among birdwatchers and those who have a passion for hand-crafted items. The community might be small, having no more than 60 people, but the island has its own convenience store, school, and even a small airport. The island’s economy is kept adrift thanks to its lush fields, the bountiful ocean, and, of course, hand-crafted products.
Probably one of the challenges of moving to the island and taking up the job is having to deal with the power shortages. With Fair Isle relying on wind turbines for electricity, on windless nights, electricity is cut off between 11:30 pm and 7:30 am.
However, the local authorities are planning on constructing additional wind turbines and a solar array, in an attempt to deal with the power shortage. As for the rest, according to Elena Mera-Long, Fair Isle’s former nurse, the people are hardworking and very open-minding. Now, in terms of wage, those who are willing to travel to UK’s remotest island will be rewarded with a salary ranging from $32,000 to $44,000.
