Regardless of the ancient roots of Halloween and the bad superstition associated with it, the holiday is still a joyful one for children. They have the chance of putting on impressive costumes and turn into their favorite characters for one night. In addition to this, they also receive sweet treats, which is a detail they couldn’t miss. Here is the dentists’ opinion on Halloween candies and how they affect children’s teeth.
According to specialists, candies which tend to stick to children’s teeth are not recommended. Gummy bears, caramel sweets, and chewy candy all fall into this category. Jawbreakers and hard candies are also a bad choice to give children on Halloween. They can chip their teeth, and by keeping them too long in their mouth and waiting for them to melt, sugar is spreading all over kids’ mouths.
On the other hand, there are also more health-friendly Halloween candies. Most of them, are sugar-free versions of classic sweets, such as lollipops and gum. The latter is also recommended because it can prevent bacteria from developing inside children’s mouth.
Dentists also approve of chocolate. It is probably one of the kids’ all-time favorite, and it also doesn’t expose their teeth to many risks. First of all, it can contain low amounts of sugar, which is perfect. Secondly, it also melts quickly so that the teeth are not exposed to damaging substances for a long time.
One of the most important recommendations from dentists is that children shouldn’t eat too many Halloween candies at the same time. Parents should watch them carefully and explain to them that sweets can’t replace proper, nutritious food. A certain timetable for eating sweets should also be set by adults, as specialists recommend.
Another important issue is brushing the teeth. Specialists suggest that toothpaste should always contain fluoride. They are also aware of the fact that some kids can be reluctant to brush their teeth, and this is why parents should be creative about making the activity fun.
Dentists have recently come up with an interesting idea about keeping children safe from tooth decay. They have started a program which encourages kids to donate the excessive Halloween candies they receive. They can keep as many as they want, but they can also choose to give away some of them, in order to avoid excess. The sweets can be taken to the dentists’ office, and they will be sent to the American soldiers who are currently on duty out of the country.
Would you like your kids to be part of such a program that helps them be healthy and do a good deed at the same time?
