It would seem that New Year’s Even on the International Space Station was not uneventful and dull as you would expect. The motley crew cheered the coming of the new year, held toast with fruit juice, sampled French cuisine, and watched some great flicks.
The six astronauts currently serving aboard the International Space Station had a memorable New Year’s Eve party. Before midnight, the six space adventurers gathered in one of the space modules in order to sample some of the goodies recently shipped to the space station, courtesy of the French government.
Their New Year’s Eve menu included chicken in white sauce, ox tongue, and gingerbread. And, of course, no New Year’s Eve meal cannot be complete without something exquisite to wash down all that delicious food.
Sadly, since NASA has strict guidelines regarding alcohol consumption aboard the International Space Station, the astronauts drank only fruit juice during their meal. But their night was just about to start. After finishing their hearty meal, the astronauts reconvened in another part of the space station for the traditional movies night.
NASA’s ground control arranged quite a surprise for the astronauts aboard the International Space Stations – instead of broadcasting old flicks, ground control sent them copies of ‘Star Wars: Rogue One,’ ‘Hidden Figures,’ and ‘Passengers.’
It would also seem that 2017 is a busy year for the intrepid crew, as Kimbrough, Whitson, and Pesquet are preparing for a series of spacewalks, which are scheduled to begin on the 10th of January. During these space excursions, the three astronauts will need to replace the old batteries used to store solar energy with lithium-ion batteries.
The devices were delivered to the space station with the last cargo supply, and the ground control team already set them in position using the space station’s robotic arm.
Whitson, who is probably the most experienced astronaut aboard the International Space Station, declared that the New Year’s Eve party was delightful and that she enjoyed watching a space-themed movie in space.
She also declared that her overall experience aboard the International Space Station was and is exhilarating. The senior astronaut said that it’s a pleasure to sleep in zero gravity, as you would doze off like a newborn without having to worry about pain.
2017 will indeed be a busy year for the ISS’s crew, as they plan to continue their research and experiments.
