John Blackwell Jr. Discovered His Talent at the Age of Three
John Blackwell Jr. became worldwide famous by joining Prince with his mad talent for drums. However, he was already on a good path even before meeting this iconic rock legend. Blackwell learned about his affinity for his soul music instrument at the early age of 3. He picked the craft from his father, John Blackwell Sr., who was a drummer by profession.
One of his secret powers was synesthesia. This feature enabled him to see music in colors. On top of that, his high school years made him discover that he had perfect pitch. All these traits helped him become the star he was meant to be in the music industry.
Blackwell started performing in public as a teenager. He played in school’s jazz and marching bands. His first professional opportunity appeared at 17 years-old by the side of bandleader Billy Eckstine. In 1998, Blackwell made it to Los Angeles where he was going to join Patti LaBelle in her musical experiences for three years. His contribution to her album “Live! One Night Only” made it a winning record which received Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.
The Artist Lost His Life to Brain Tumor
While on a concert with Patti LaBelle in Minneapolis, Blackwell received the opportunity of his life which was that of meeting Prince. He joined the artist’s band, The New Power Generation, in 2000. They played and toured together for 12 years.
