Celebrities have always been a point of interest for people and magazines, and have always been great promoters. There are a lot of campaigns which stand proof for that. Such is the case of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who succeeded in getting people’s attention on the effects of global warming.
Leonardo DiCaprio (41) is one of the best-rated actors in Hollywood, and this Oscar for best actor in controversial movie “The Revenant” (2015) is a token of appreciation for his work and devotion to the movie industry. He won his first Oscar on February 28 for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “The Revenant” – a movie inspired by a real story.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s acceptance speech of the trophy went viral because this has been his first Oscar. Also, there is another reason: during his speech, after thanking fellow actors and the movie director, the famous film star talked about one of the main messages that “The Revenant” sends: wild nature is a crucial part of our life, and we need to take care of it and of our planet.
“Climate change is real. It is happening right now. “It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”, it is one of the most moving parts of DiCaprio’s discourse.
Leonardo DiCaprio also suggested that our intentions as a nation should be the same, and we should follow leaders who want the best for us and for our natural environment.
Researchers observed that the number of Google searches and twits related to the matter have unexpectedly increased after the famous speech. National Daily Press reports on the statistics:
““DiCaprio effect” exceeded the daily average result of the 2015 Conference of the Parties (COP) and the Earth Day upshot by a factor of 3.2 and 5.3, respectively. At the same time, Google searches for “climate change” or “global warming” increased 261% (95%CI, 186–335) and 210% (95%CI 149–272) the day DiCaprio spoke and remained higher for 4 more days, representing 104,190 and 216,490 searches. This increase was 3.8 and 4.3 times larger than the increases observed during COP’s daily average or on Earth Day.”
Leonardo DiCaprio’s acceptance speech at the 2016 Oscars received incredible feedback from people around the world. Celebrities are still best promoters, and they should consider campaigns for noble causes more often. We work well together.
