Blue Bell officials have announced earlier this week that they will recall some of their branded products from the market. Why? Because there is a new listeria risk, related to two of the famous ice cream flavors. The Blue Bell Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Blue Bell Cookie Two Step are to be taken out of the shelves of the ten states they have been already distributed to.
The ice cream label attributed the problems to some difficulties regarding the testing of the products. The products come from their Alabama facility, according to the official release. Ten states received the contaminated merchandise, namely Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee Louisiana, Florida, and Virginia.
Officials insisted on that the recall was only a caution measure. Moreover, no listeria cases have been reported so far, which is a good thing. However, this is the second recall in the history of a company with more than a hundred years of tradition.
Listeria is a disease which affects mostly children, but also elderly people, who have problems with their immune system. It can trigger nausea and fever to people who get the infection. The bacterium called Listeria monocytogenes, can cause severe damages to pregnant women, as it can lead to miscarriages.
The announcement from Blue Bell came on Wednesday. It was only a year ago when the company announced there was a listeria risk related to its products. Ten listeria cases were reported back then, three of them resulting in the death of the patients.
The recall in 2015 led to a significant loss for the ice cream label. Its laboratories were shut for several months, and it lost seven of the states it used to deliver its products to. Now, Blue Bell is available in sixteen states in the U.S. There are also fewer flavors, as they used to have thirty, and now there are twenty-five left.
Since Blue Bell lost some of its customers, their workforce was also reduced. The statistics show that it was lowered by approximately thirty-six percent. Now the company counts on 2,500 employees.
Because of the alleged listeria risk, the ice cream producer faces further investigation from officials. Perhaps new regulation will be required from them. They are also likely to pay significant fines. All in all, by adding the fines and the quantity of merchandise to be withdrew from the market, Blue Bell also faces significant money loss.
