NASA officials have recently announced another spatial discovery. Scientists have found a new galaxy cluster, and by all the signs, it seems to be at a crucial stage of its evolution. All of the features of the new galaxy cluster make it even more important and interesting in the eyes of the scientific community.
The discovery of the new galaxy cluster was made by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which belongs to NASA. The leader of the researchers’ team was Tao Wang.
What is so special about this formation is that no other similar formation has ever been found at such a great distance out in space. Researchers estimate its position at about of 11.1 billion light-years from our planet. It is also believed to be the biggest formation which relies on gravity.
The galaxy cluster was given a scientific name, which is CL J1001+0220. Scientists observed that it is in an early stage of its development, so it is considered a young formation. This gives them the opportunity to study in depth details of the evolution of a galaxy cluster.
Galaxies are wide systems, containing stars, dust, interstellar gas, and dark matter. The recently discovered CL J1001+0220 seems to be composed of at least eleven major galaxies. Scientists also found that nine of them are extremely populated by stars.
Clusters are created when separate galaxies come together. This is a rare event, as scientists inform. They consider themselves lucky for having encountered CL J1001+0220. What gave the formation away was the large quantity of hot gas because it is this substance that led the researchers to the cluster. Hot gas is characteristic of galaxy clusters, according to specialists.
The team of researchers also wrote a study documenting on the massive discovery. They noted that galaxies which are part of a group are more likely to give birth to stars. The process is also shorter and more violent than what happens in typical galaxies.
As it is so young, the new galaxy cluster is expanding, and this is why many of its principal galaxies are giving birth to a great number of stars, at hallucinating rates. The researchers are amazed by the phenomenon. The early stage of the galaxy cluster is called “protocluster.”
Apart from the Chandra X-ray Observatory, there are other telescopes and satellites in space which provide the astronomers with information about the developing stages of the new galaxy cluster.
