A submarine would probably not be on your list when it comes to possible spacecraft that would help in better understanding our own solar system. Well, NASA is actually considering the use of a submarine to explore Saturn’s moon which is called Titan.
The submarine design was uncovered by the space agency earlier this week in the NASA Institute for Advance Concepts sympotion in Florida. NASA is hoping that the sub can be used to explore the oceans of Titan sometime in 2040.
The scientists at NASA are specifically interested in exploring the Kraken Mare that is a 154,000-square mile ocean featuring tides that are the same with that of planet Earth.
The sub is expected to spend 16 hours every day exploring the Kraken Mare. It will transmit data to NASA using an antenna that is installed in its dorsmal fin. While it stays on the surface, the sub will gather valuable data using its own mast camera.
