An alarmingly high number of people have engaged in the health trend which involves drinking untreated water. This has happened due to their fear of consuming the tap water treated with all kinds of substances. The untreated drink is described as raw water, with a mildly sweet taste and a somehow smoothness, but it can be full of bacteria and impurities.
People are afraid of tap water
The tap water we drink is treated with all kinds of substances to kill all the bacteria and dirt present in it. It undergoes a series of processes of purification and coagulation, and also gets some added substances, such as fluoride. However, it still happens quite often that it causes diseases like giardia, salmonella, or hepatitis A.
Although the water system is not always flawless, it manages to keep away most bacteria. Also, most cases of digestive diseases are transmitted through private water sources, such as wells, where the water hadn’t undergone any purification. However, people seem to be extremely afraid of all these processes and additional substances, so they started drinking raw water.
The raw water trend is only seemingly healthy
This raw water has not been treated, and comes from natural sources. Although it sounds healthier, the disease risk is huge. There are a few examples of people who got sick after drinking such water. For instance, in 2012, 21 people who drank from a stream at an Alaska camp got infected with giardia. Also, in 2011, 100 others got infected with norovirus after drinking from a spring in New Mexico.
As mentioned above, tap water isn’t 100 percent safe either. In fact, this is the main reason why so many people opted for this seemingly healthy raw water trend. However, this is only an appearance, as clear spring water is full of bacteria and dirt which can only be removed through serious purification processes.
