Over the last decades, antibiotics have become more and more common. Therefore, as they have become more various, their use has increased as well.
Unfortunately, people do not understand the real concept of antibiotics. They are very strong drugs that can cure many diseases, but they should be used only if it’s highly necessary.
According to Dr. Albert Richert Jr., a pediatrician at the Pediatric Center of Southwest Louisiana, antibiotics should be used to deal with bacteria, not viral infections.
The excessive use of antibiotics has led to an increased antibiotic resistance during the last few years. Scientists have recently found out that there is a type of bacteria capable of resisting to Colistin.
Colistin is a very powerful antibiotic used as a last resort to deal with highly resistant bacteria. Dr. Richert also stated that many patients are taking antibiotics without knowing the exact reason. When they are asked, their usual answer is that they just stick to the prescription.
Antibiotics should not be taken just because you have a cough or a running nose. Moreover, experts underline that these powerful drugs should only be prescribed in case of a significant bacterial infection. According to Dr. Anatole Karpovs, a pediatrician at the Children’s Clinic of Southwest Louisiana, another leading cause of antibiotic resistance is our food.
Worse, antibiotics are used to stimulate animal growth and have become a common ‘ingredient’ used in the animal industry. Plus, these powerful drugs are used in most of our food supply. Even if they deal with illnesses that might occur in the animal growth, they have severe consequences on the human organism.
It is already known that 70 percent of the disease causes originate from foods. Therefore, having a healthy diet is crucial if you want to avoid developing serious health problems. Furthermore, scientists advise people to avoid taking antibiotics just in case. Instead, they should do their best to eat healthy food.
Fortunately, the CDC is going to invest $160 in developing new strategies, better antibiotics and a more efficient approach to every health problem.
Many organizations throughout the United States are trying to raise awareness regarding the excessive use of antibiotics. Hopefully, their initiative will pay off, and people will change their perspective. If we make wiser choices regarding our lives, we will be able to prevent many illnesses and also avoid relying on powerful drugs.
