Scott Kelly, space traveler says our planet seems very fragile when you look at it from space. After spending 500 days in space, Scott Kelly described Earth’s atmosphere as fragile. He added our planet is always wrapped in a cloud of pollution.
The space traveler hit the record for being in orbit longer than any astronaut and is now coming back home. Before departing he gave an interview for CNN, talking about his experience of living on board the International Space Station.
When he described his journey, Scott Kelly admitted the mission took longer than he expected as time didn’t pass easily up there. He confirmed the mission was very important to him. He now holds a greater respect for freedom and for the things that our planet puts at our disposal.
Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent at CNN, asked Kelly to say a few words about Earth. Gupta was very interested in how our planet looks like from the International Space Station. Kelly admitted seeing many things he didn’t expect.
For example, the astronaut described the appearance of certain parts of the world at various times. He went on saying that some parts of Asia and Central America seem specifically polluted when you look at them from space. Moreover, when he further analyzed them and their surrounding atmosphere, Kelly got the impression that those areas are very sick regions.
The astronaut made a remarkable statement describing Earth as being particularly fragile. He mentioned that our planet seriously needs to be taken care of.
“When you look at the atmosphere on the limb of the Earth, I wouldn’t say it looks unhealthy, but it definitely looks very fragile and just kind of like this thin film, so it looks like something that we definitely need to take care of.”
During his time on the station, Kelly has been online on social platforms. He took photos of our planet and then shared them on the Internet. The time he spent in space allowed him to be part of six different missions. One of his main purposes is to find out if trips to Mars can actually happen.
As a response to this, scientists claimed trips to Mars require a huge amount of preparation to actually take place. Mars has a higher level of radiation than our planet which would make things really challenging when launching a mission. At the moment, the astronaut is on his 501st day in space. He is expected to come back home in March.
