Whenever people want to stick to a diet, fats might be the biggest problem. However, healthy fats might be even better if you want to lose a couple of pounds.
Based on the latest research, a healthy diet does not mean that you have to eat just a little food every day. A typical diet includes healthy meals which combined with physical exercises can help you achieve the weight that you only dreamed of.
A team of scientists from the University of Barcelona developed a study in which they tried to establish if there is a diet based on healthy fats that can help you become fit. Over 7,400 women and men with ages between 55 and 80 participated in the study.
It is worth mentioning that over 90% percent of them were obese or at least overweight, and all of them had a high risk of developing heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Then three groups were formed, and every group had to stick to a diet.
The first group followed a low-fat diet, the second a Mediterranean diet rich in nuts, and the third group a Mediterranean diet based on olive oil. The researchers followed the groups for five years to establish how every diet will influence their weight.
Depending on the results, scientists learned that total fat intake increased in both Mediterranean diet groups from 40 percent to 42, whereas the fat intake decreased in the low-fat group from 40 percent to 37. However, every participant lost a few pounds meaning that the healthy fats were not related to obesity or weight gain.
The people from the nut group had an average weight loss of 0.9 pounds, the ones from the low-fat group had an average of 1.3 pounds and the participants from the olive oil group had an average weight loss of 2 pounds.
According to Dr. Ramon Estruch, lead author of the research, for more than 40 years nutritionists recommended only low-fat diets. However, it seems that Mediterranean diets are also efficient and healthy.
Still, researchers underlined that people should avoid unhealthy fats from fast foods, sweetened beverages, processed meat, and butter. Instead, they should focus on healthy fats from nuts, fish and vegetable oils.
All in all, the healthy fats from the Mediterranean diet are our best bet if we want to eat tasty food while still losing a couple of pounds.
