Latest news revealed that drummers will get an extra robotic arm to help them improve their musical skills. Scientists designed a wearable robotic arm which reacts to human gestures. It also responds to music, allowing drummers to use three hands to play.
The robotic arm is two feet long and can be attached to any musician’s arm. As scientists claim, it can improvise based on the beat and rhythm it listens. Gil Weinberg, head of the Center for Music Technology, Georgia, said
“The third arm provides a much richer and more creative experience, allowing the human to play many drums simultaneously with virtuosity and sophistication that are not otherwise possible.”
Moreover, the robotic arm can hit a drum up to 20 times per second, which humans cannot even attempt. Experts claim that designing a functioning robotic arm is a real challenge. The limb needs to follow the beat and switch between cymbals and drums. This way, each strike will enable the right amount of pressure. In addition, the arm plays very subtle.
It is attentive to the drummer and can it can change the ride cymbal and the floor tom according to the drum’s part the musician is using. Also, it adapts to the drummer’s speed. The experts designed the robotic arm using motion-capture technology. This way, it can move as humans do. In 2014, Weinberg had also created a robotic prosthesis for a drummer who lost his arm.
For most of the drummers, losing a hand means the end of their career. That project’s success convinced Weinberg to move on and creating a smart device able to turn musicians into cyborg drummers. With such technology, Weinberg helps drummers to keep playing as well as improving musician’s skills. Experts said they are to conduct a series of tests with an electroencephalogram (EEG).
Such a thing will enable them to see the brain patterns of the drummer. Eventually, this allows the robotic arm to become one with the owner. Moreover, Gil Weinberg claimed he is considering using this technology in other fields as well. He said the medical field will improve considerably if doctors use such technologies.
Other technical areas will also change as technicians will be given an extra hand to make difficult repairs or conduct challenging experiments. The fact that drummers will get an extra robotic arm proves technology continues to move with an incredible speed.
