Recent news reported the moon played outer space-type music during the Apollo mission, four decades ago. It was revealed the Apollo mission crew heard strange radio transmissions that sounded like music during their journey. It is widely known that 1969 is the year when man successfully landed on the moon.
Two months before landing, Apollo 10 entered lunar orbit, crossing the far side on the moon. In doing so, the spacecraft stopped receiving radio contact from Earth for almost an hour. In that hour, nobody on Earth could see or hear the spacecraft. That’s when the crew heard the music-like sounds. However, they didn’t know whether they should or shouldn’t report them to NASA. After the mission, everyone was told the mission was a complete success.
Nonetheless, after four decades lost recordings emerged, revealing the mysterious sounds the three Apollo astronauts had heard. According to NASA’s Unexplained Files TV Series, the sounds on the tapes were very strange and otherworldly. The three astronauts were startled by the sounds, as they claimed they have never heard them before.
The music-like sounds lasted the whole hour the spacecraft was on the far side on the moon. However, before the radio contact was re-established, the astronauts weren’t decided to tell Mission Control about their recent experience. On the show, Apollo 15 astronaut, Al Worden said
“The Apollo 10 crew was very used to the kind of noise that they should be hearing. Logic tells me that if there was something recorded on there, then there was something there.”
Also, he explained NASA would not make public secret information if they considered it was for the best. The Apollo 10 mission transcripts were classified and remained in NASA’s archives until 2008. During this time there was an ongoing debate on the origins of the unsettling sounds the astronauts heard. In a new series, NASA’s Unexplained Files tried to go further and discover what those sounds really were.
The show pointed out some theories as to the nature of the music-like sounds. One of them claims that a magnetic field or atmosphere interfered with the radio. However, experts said there is no magnetic field in the moon. Also, the atmosphere up there is not enough to cause such strange sounds. The idea that the moon played outer space-type music is still under investigation. Experts claim this will remain a mystery until proved otherwise.
