Everyone is looking forward to getting tanned this summer, but if we do not pay attention, we might get burnt by the sun instead.
Experts underline that purchasing a healthy sunscreen product may significantly reduce the risk of being harmed by the sun rays. According to Dr. Katherine Fiala, residency program director of the dermatology department at Baylor Scott & White Healthcare in Temple, the sun damage we experience before the age of 18 takes its toll on our skin for a long time.
She also stated that if we reapply sunscreen correctly, it may help us reduce the risk of premature aging and wrinkles as well. First of all, it is crucial to avoid being outside between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. because these are the hottest hours of the day.
Regarding the color of skin, persons with a darker pigmentation are less likely to get sunburnt. Instead, they get tanned easier and faster. However, individuals who have green or blue eyes, blond or red hair, are more likely to get sunburnt.
A person’s skin depends very much on genes. That is why people with darker skin have an advantage compared to the rest. In other words, the lighter your skin, the more vulnerable you are to UV rays. Nevertheless, in case you get burnt by the sun, aloe vera gel is very useful and can also be used if your skin is peeling because it allows the skin to heal itself.
But if you experience a high level of discomfort or suffer some inflammation on your skin, you can use a towel filled with ice packs, and you can take a pill of ibuprofen. Regarding the correct type of sunscreen product, experts advise people to look for labels writing ‘broad spectrum.’
It was discovered that UVA rays are more dangerous than UVB rays because they are stronger and penetrate the skin even deeper, increasing the risk of developing skin cancer. Concerning the sun protection factor, sunscreen with SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of all UV rays and is the best choice.
Products with higher SPF are a little better only if your skin is highly sensitive to the sun rays. Sunscreen should be reapplied at every two hours, after swimming or excessive sweating. It is also worth mentioning that people should check the ingredients to establish whether they are allergic to it or not.
