In the wake of a penitentiary riot which took place on Thursday, two prisoners were killed, and many sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The scene of the riot was the Tecumseh prison, were several inmates gathered in the courtyard and threw a couple of mattresses on fire. No correctional officers were injured during the recent revolt, but the prison was placed on lockdown for several hours.
The Department of Correctional Services is currently investigating events which took place at the Tecumseh Prison on Thursday. According to the Institution, the same prison was the scene of another revolt which took place in May 2015. No casualties were recording during the May uprising, but the inmates caused property damages evaluated at $2 million. Over a hundred inmates were involved in this riot.
This new incident which took place at the Tecumseh prison ended in tragedy. After the authorities managed to force the inmates back to their cells and extinguish the fires started in the courtyard, they have discovered the bodies of two inmates in the prison’s housing unit.
Since this is an on-going investigation, the authorities refused to disclose any information regarding how the two prisoners were murdered. Furthermore, they were unable to establish the reason why the inmates decided to riot that day.
Several spokespersons from the corrections employee’s union declared that on that day, several inmates gathered in the prison’s courtyard and began to shout and to wave their hands. After a couple of minutes, some of them came out with a couple of mattresses and threw them in the bonfire the other prisoners started.
According to Director Scott Frakes of the southeast Nebraska Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, over 40 inmates were involved in the riot. Fortunately, the uprising was confined to only one unit and, per Director Frakes’s statement, the inmates did not pose a public threat.
As for the two inmates who were found dead inside the housing unit, the Department of Correctional Services has started an official investigation to determine why the two were killed and what started this riot.
Furthermore, all the individuals involved in the recent Tecumseh prison uprising will be question and more than likely convicted in connection with the two murders. The authorities placed the Tecumseh prison on lockdown at approximately 2:45 pm and lifted it at around 5:30 pm when they said that it is safe for the inmates to return to the housing unit.
