A recent incident involving an Australian woman and eye makeup should be a warning for all women to be careful when removing their mascara. Theresa Lynch, aged 50, wasn’t too good at cleaning her face at the end of the day. As a result, she developed some strange lumps under her eyelids that almost left her blind.
The woman didn’t properly remove her eye makeup
Lynch ignored the importance of removing eye makeup, so she ended up suffering some serious vision problems. One day, she felt an uncomfortable sensation in her eyes, as if something was hiding under her lids and was putting pressure on her eyeballs. Therefore, she decided to go see a doctor and discover what was going wrong.
When questioned about her makeup habits, she admitted she was doing it wrong. For 25 years, she used mascara more than regularly and applied quite a lot of it. However, she didn’t remove it properly. In fact, she often forgot to wash her eye makeup off before going to bed. This sounds like a bad thing to do, but it’s actually worse than you would expect.
She had mascara buildups on her conjunctiva membrane
The doctor looked under her eyelids and was terrified. On her conjunctiva, the membrane between the eyelid and the white of the eye, the woman had some black-colored lumps that were doing damage both to the cornea and to the membrane. These strange lumps were actually mascara that had accumulated under the eyelids throughout the years.
These strange lumps put a lot of pressure on Lynch’s eyes, which explained the discomfort she was experiencing. In some cases, the eye makeup buildups could have gotten infected and caused the woman to go blind. She had to undergo a procedure to have all these painful lumps removed, but she is still not completely healthy right now. Her eyelids will remain scarred for the rest of her life.
The study on the consequences of not removing eye makeup was published in the journal Ophthalmology.
