After Grumpy Cat gained an unexpectedly large following on social media, now Worried Cat is becoming the latest online sensation, having recently melted the Internet’s heart with its perpetually vexed look.
The feline was discovered last year after having been deserted alongside its siblings, and the entire litter of tabbies was taken to the San Diego Humane Society Kitten Nursery, located in Oceanside, California.
Soon after being nursed back to health by the animal shelter’s volunteers, the eternally worried cat sparked the interest of one of the center’s visitors, who had come there in search of a new pet.
24-year old Courtney Morman eventually adopted the 5-month-old tom cat, and named him Bum, in honor of her favorite athlete: Madison Bumgarner, a Major League Baseball player who has been pitching for the San Francisco Giants ever since 2009.
As Morman explained, it was impossible not to take a liking for Bum, not just because of its unusual looks, but also because of its adorably silly and playful demeanor.
While Bum may appear like an inconsolably worried cat all the time, because its eyes are crossed all the time, and its eyelids have a rather peculiar shape, Morman has said that in fact the feline is far from distressed or unhappy.
A veterinarian even gave Bum a thorough examination, in order to confirm that there was no other underlying health issue bothering it, but aside from the obvious strabismus affecting the kitten, no other anomalies have been identified.
Strangely enough, despite suffering from this vision disorder causing its eyes to focus in different directions, Bum is actually quite a skilled hunter, constantly catching insects or running after toys.
The cat is also extremely loving and friendly, always trying to play around with Leo, Morman’s canine friend, and having been virtually inseparable from an older 3-legged feline called “Admirable Kitty Kingman”, up until the pet’s recent death.
Even after the loss of its beloved pal, Bum has remained quite welcoming and affectionate whenever a new rescued kitten is brought home by Morman, who loves taking in new animals from shelters, in order to offer them the care, rehabilitation and attention they require.
With humans, the feline is equally good-natured and tender, always being up for a good cuddle although he takes a little while to warm up to newcomers. Bum is also a little too bright, easily opening drawers or unzipping purses, in search for new playthings.
Morman never expected that her feline’s story would be so prominently featured on the Love Meow blog dedicated to feline fanatics, or that the worried cat would turn out to be so popular on Instagram, where it already gained more than 9,000 followers.
However, now that the feline is benefiting from this unforeseen wave of publicity, his owner is hoping that more people will be tempted to adopt cats from animal shelters, offering them a much-needed home of their own, instead of turning to pet stores instead.
