Four people were found dead in a multimillion-dollar home from Northwest Washington. According to Chief Cathy Lanier from the district of Columbia Police the fire was intentional.
The victims were a married couple, their son and a housekeeper. Savvas Savopoulos was 46 years old and was a corporate executive, his wife, Amy Savopoulos, was 47 years old and their son Phillip was 10 years old. The housekeeper was identified as 57-year-old Veralicia Figueroa. There were no signs of forced entry. According to the neighbors the couple also had two older daughters who are out of state, attending boarding schools. A police spokeswoman said that they have found out where the girls are and they know that they are safe.
All the four victims had stab wounds or blunt-force injuries. An internal fire department report says that one of the victims displayed signs of blunt force trauma and was bleeding from the head, whereas the other three victims had been stabbed. According to autopsy findings they were injured before the fire started. This indicates that they were all homicide victims. According to Cathy Lanier the investigation has just begun and evidence will further be collected in the following few days.
On Thursday night the family’ car was discovered in Prince George’s County, Md. The vehicle had also been set on fire. The car was a 2008 blue Porsche and had the Washington tag DK2418. It was seen at the house at around 10:30 AM.
Savvas Savopolous was the president of the building materials manufacturer American Iron Works, which is based in Hyattsville, Md. The family’s house was worth $4.5 million.
Joe Carregal, a neighbor, was walking his dog on Thursday when he felt the smell of smoke so he went to check out what was going wrong down the block from where he lives.
“It was all smoke and then boom, it went to fire, coming from the second floor,” Carregal explained.
Afterwards a man knocked on the door, but there was no reply. Shortly afterwards the firefighters arrived and broke down the door. In order to get to the roof they used two ladders. According to Carregal it took 25 minutes to get three of the victims out on stretchers. The doctors performed CPR trying to revive them.
Another neighbor, Lisa Lamber, said that the residents were frightened by this incident. Everyone in the neighborhood is very concerned about this. According to her people liked the family so what happened came as a surprise for everyone.
