Pennsylvania authorities reported that the nationwide manhunt for Steve Stephens, the man who shot a septuagenarian while live streaming on Facebook, has ended on early Tuesday morning. The Cleveland gunner decided to put an end to his life after a brief car chase involving a McDonald’s employee and several state trooper cars.
According to the Cleveland authorities, Steve Stephens mistake that cost him his life was to drive to a local McDonald’s restaurant, located approximately 100 miles from where he shot and killed 74-year-old Robert Godwin senior.
Cleveland Gunner is Recognized
On early Tuesday morning, the Cleveland gunner drove to the Erie McDonald’s to order breakfast. Upon reaching the first drive-thru windows, Stephens told the restaurant’s employee that he wanted 20 chicken nuggets with a side of fries.
The man was preparing to pay for his order when the employee recognized him TV. After taking Stephen’s money, the employee redirected the man to the next window to pick up his order. In the meantime, the attendant informed Thomas DuCharme Jr., the restaurant’s owner, and his colleague serving at the next window that he saw Steve Stephens and that he is going to call the authorities.
The Cleveland Gunner drove to the next windows while the attendant was on the phone, talking to the 911 dispatcher. To keep him preoccupied, DuCharme Jr. and the other attendant told the man that his side order of French fries would take longer than expected.
The Pursuit Begins
However, sensing that he’s being set up, Stephens declined the fries order, paid for his chicken nuggets, and left the restaurant’s drive-thru as fast as he could.
In fact, according to the authorities, Stephens was so eager to get away from the restaurant that he nearly hit another McDonald’s employee with his vehicle. Several minutes later, two state trooper cruisers were pursuing the Cleveland gunner’s vehicle.
Seeing that the individual has no intention of surrendering, the state troopers in pursuit decided to perform a risky car maneuver. After nearing an abandoned school, on the troopers hit Stephens’ car in the rear bumper, making the car stop after completing a half turn.
When the car came to a complete stop, the state trooper got out of their vehicle and moved in to take the Cleveland gunner into custody. However, upon approaching the vehicle, they heard a distinct gunshot coming from Stephens’ vehicle. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the authorities discovered that the man shot himself in the head.
