Specialists have recently led a new study, examining the drinking water across the United States. They found that water is contaminated with chromium-6, which is also called hexavalent chromium. The substance is known to be threatening to people’s health, as it can cause cancer.
The new study was conducted by a non-profit organization called Environmental Working Group (EWG). According to the recent findings, most of the samples examined by researchers tested positive for the cancer-causing chemical, at a rate of seventy-five percent. All the states in the U.S. are exposed to the risk brought by drinking water. Out of the fifty regions, the some of the highest levels of the substance were reported in Ohio.
The statistics from Environmental Working Group show that two hundred million people in the United States are exposed to the risks of polluted drinking water. The researchers in charge of the study estimate that 12,000 Americans face the risk of developing cancer because of the chemicals in their tap water.
Scientists explain that chromium-6 is a substance which emerges when chromium starts to oxidize. Chromium is a metal which can be found in the soil, and this is how the toxin ends up in our drinking water. The substance was detected through a chemical process, based on the reactions and the colors of elements.
As far as the process of purification is concerned, it can only be performed with special appliances and treatment from officials. One of the most used methods is reverse osmosis. It also implies biological and chemical processes. People can’t purify their own tap water at home with their filters. There are more advanced filters, but they are not enough to eliminate the damaging substance.
However, authorities do not intend to alarm people. Officials in some counties state that they have also tested several drinking water supplies, and they are safe to drink. Nevertheless, the chemical which comes from both pollution and natural causes does taint the U.S. water.
Specialists warn that the chemicals in our drinking water are not the only substances which can trigger the development of cancer. There are other chemicals in foods and beverage that we consume on a daily basis and that are equally dangerous. The risk is even higher with the combination of these toxins.
Researchers think about a proper method of reducing the level of chromium-6 in our drinking water, a method that should be available for people to use freely. The creation process of such a product will take developers more than a year. So people will have to wait a while until the public release of the product.
