The Equinox Gym at Merrick Park, a crowded shopping center, was the scene of a bloody shooting which took place on the 8th of April. Authorities declared that, during the incident, two people were killed, and one is critically injured. The gunman is apparently and the ex-gym employee who thought that the gun is the best way to settle the score with his former employer. The Equinox gym and the rest of the shops around Merrick Park have been placed on lockdown.
According to Coral Gables Police Department, the Equinox gym, a training center located at Merrick Park, a bustling shopping and business center, was placed on lockdown after an individual reported hearing gunshots coming from inside the gym.
After surrounding the training center, the authorities established that the gunshots were apparently fired from the handgun belonging to 33-year-old Abeku Wilson, a bodybuilder, and an ex-Equinox employee.
From the available information on the case, the authorities managed to piece together the events that led to the Saturday tragedy. It would appear that Wilson had an argument with the gym’s manager. When the manager told Wilson the reason his contract with the Equinox gym has been terminated, Wilson apparently became enraged and started to threaten him.
At one point during their conversation, Wilson drew out the handgun he concealed in his work-out clothes and opened fire on the gym manager. Seeing the manager collapse, Wilson turned his attention towards one of his former co-workers and pulled the trigger.
Before the authorities could move in to apprehend Wilson, the individual turned the gun on himself and fired. According to the Coral Gables authorities, the Abeku Wilson was declared dead at the scene and Janine Ackerman, the gym’s manager, and Wilson’s ex-employer, was rushed to the nearby hospital for medical attention.
Unfortunately, given the severity of her injuries, Ackerman died several hours later. The other gym employee wounded by Wilson during his rampage was also rushed to the hospital in critical, yet stable condition. According to the doctors, he has great chances of recovering.
Shortly after the police declared the area safe, the Equinox gym issued a public statement in which it declared that, in memory of the tragic events that unfolded on Saturday morning, the establishment would refrain from making any comments.
It would appear that approximately 100 people were serving lunch at the nearby restaurant when the incident occurred.
