Researchers have discovered a new way of keeping heart disease at bay. The secret lies in following a diet high in potassium, as these foods maintain the health of the arteries, prevents them from building up cholesterol and keeps them from calcifying. Among these foods, there are fruits everyone enjoys eating, such as avocados and bananas.
It’s worth following the high-potassium food trend
People have started eating a lot of avocados lately, as they have adopted this emerging trend. Scientists found evidence in favor of this trend and proved eating avocados, and other high-potassium foods have dozens of benefits for the heart health. It seems the potassium in these foods preserves the health of the arteries, as it keeps them from hardening or from calcifying.
For the study, which got published in the journal JCI Insight, the researchers gathered some mice which were more likely to develop heart disease if put on a diet rich in fats. Then, these were split into three groups. The first group received a high-potassium diet, the second one a menu with a medium quantity of potassium, and the third one had to consume low-potassium foods.
Bananas and avocados are the richest in potassium
The observations showed how the people who received low potassium foods had a high level of stiffening in their arteries, much higher when compared to the medium group. In contrast, calcification and hardening in the arteries significantly decreased in the high-potassium diet.
When thinking about foods rich in potassium, bananas are the first ones on the list, with about 425 mg contained in one serving. Avocados are close to the top as well, as they also contain a high amount of the substance. Other high-potassium foods include artichokes, baked potatoes, no-fat milk, or raisins without seeds.
