Living with a cat has a huge number of benefits, both from a psychological and from a physical point of view. Some studies have showing that playing with cats reduces the risk of suffering a heart attack, so it’s great for the elderly to live with such a fluffy animal. However, taking care of a cat is hard work, so researchers decided to find a solution for those people who cannot breed a living cat.
The robocat will offer people the affection of a real cat
If you have a cat, you must know how difficult it is sometimes to clean after it, play with it, and make sure it feels loved and protected. In theory, it’s great to have a pet, but it comes with great responsibilities. Therefore, researchers decided to give older people the chance to benefit from the advantages of a pet without much effort, and created a robocat.
The robocat is the product of the toy company Hasbro and the Brown University researcher. However, the idea belongs to the National Science Foundation, who wanted to integrate artificial intelligence in a toy from Hasbro’s Joy for All collection. Apart from keeping old people company, the smart toy can actually work like some sort of caretaker.
The robocat can assist the elderly with performing simple tasks
The robocat makes sure its owner takes their medicine at the proper hours, helps them find things in their homes, and assists them on regular tasks. It also behaves like a real-life cat, by purring and asking for cuddles. Therefore, it helps older people no longer feel lonely, offering them a great psychological boost.
At the moment, the robocat is available for sale as a companion. Shortly, it should be able to offer people assistance on performing simple tasks. Researchers said there wouldn’t be anything too complicated, but it should still allow the elderly to spend more time in their homes instead of care facilities.
