SCE or the Southern California Edison teamed up with Tesla as the two developed a large scale, battery storage facility in Ontario, California. The new system should power up almost 15,000 homes, even during peak hours.
This new system was officially released earlier this week. On January 30, SEC authorities and Tesla officials presented the new Mira Loma energy storage station.
Situated in Ontario, California, the project was developed in a record time. It took only about three months before the system was up and running. Last year, Tesla proposed a new energy solution. In less than six months, their proposal is already operational.
The company collaborated with the Southern California Edison. SEC, an electric utility company, jumped at the idea. It could help impose a new, efficient electron-storing solution. SEC was already looking to complete its grid. The urgency was determined by the closing down of the Aliso Canyon.
Whilst this latter was a natural gas storage facility, the new solution will also be more environmentally friendly. The new Mira Loma site is a 20-megawatt energy storage facility.
It is based on industrial inverters and Tesla Powerpacks. These are spread over a 1.5-acre lot. The Tesla battery boxes may not look too impressive. But they are quite powerful. They should be able to power up around 15,000 homes. Their energy needs should be sustained over 4 hours in peak periods.
The battery facility could also ensure a house’s entire daily needs. But in such cases, the grid would only power up about 2,500 homes.
Still, this new SEC solution is an important alternative. It could help fill up the energy gaps. And it could do so without aid from fossil fuel-powered stations.
The Mira Loma unit is one of the largest electron-storing solutions in the world. Kevin Payne went to offer details. He is the SCE CEO. And according to him, this is not o test or a pilot program.
The facility is fully functional and already running. This new project is also part of a step in a bigger program. It is part of the Southern California Edison’s vision for the future.
CES’s new facility is also quite easy and fast to set up. Tesla Powerpack containers and inverters just have to be connected. They need a concrete base and to be installed. After that, they are connected to the power grid.
On Monday, the energy-storage station went online. The system analyzes the power grid. As it detects a surplus, its large batteries pull it. Stored in the batteries, this energy can be used as a backup.
Before such systems were created, surplus power was wasted away. Its source, be it renewable or fossil fuel, did not matter.
The Tesla Powerpacks will be able to provide energy in cases of outages. Or they could supplement the grid when it is maxed out. This latter could happen in periods with high consumption levels. For example, in the summer.
Mira Loma could become an invaluable part of the system. Presently, renewable energy sources produce more energy than the system requires. In the past, such power was lost. But now it can be stored and used later on.
This will also help the SEC and similar providers reduce the need of fossil-fuel-generated electricity. The new storage battery system is expected to expand. More such stations could appear over the next few years.
